一條由華工鋪就的鐵路成就了今日的美利堅合眾國。然而，就在橫貫大鐵路的最後一顆道被敲進枕木的同時，在美華人卻陷入了歷史上最為屈辱的60年。在《排華法案》的擠壓下，美國華人在夾縫中艱難生存。從天使島到中國城，面對冷眼、排擠甚至殘忍的殺戮，華人代代傳承了先人隱忍不屈、積極進取的精神，在異國他鄉的土地上堅定前行，開辟出一條繼往開來的生息之路。 Today’s prosperity of the United States cannot be accomplished without the First Transcontinental Railroad. The Chinese railroad workers have made such a significant contribution building the railroad. However, when the last spike was driven in the railroad, a long nightmare began for all Chinese in America. Under the oppression of the Chinese Exclusion Act, Chinese Americans were living painfully in the margins of the society. Chinese were expelled and even slaughtered in the Chinatown as well as detained on Angel Island. Yet, “what does not kill you makes you stronger”, with the spirits of the persistence and toughness that the Chinese inherited from their ancestors, they created a path that leads them to the success.

在一望無際的美國內華達山脈上，海拔2100米的塞拉嶺終年積雪，險峭無比，盡是堅不可摧的花崗岩。而在百余年前，華工們正是在這裡歷經了歷史上最為寒冷的兩個冬天，用雙手、鐵鎬、重錘和炸藥，洞穿了整座大山，創造了世界工程史上的奇跡——絕頂隧道。從一天三釐米到一天十六公裡，不可思議的鋪軌紀錄，至今無人能破。翻越崇山峻嶺，穿過茫茫荒漠，偉大的成就背後，卻是沉重的代價。 150 years ago, in Sierra Mountains, the Chinese Railroad Workers had suffered in two coldest winters on record. 2100 meters above sea level, extremely steep cliffs are formed by stiff granite and covered by large amounts of snow. The miracle of constructing tunnels were created only by hand tools. Laying tracks from 3 centimeters to 16 kilometers a day; they have made such an unbeatable achievement. Climbing over the lofty mountains and crossing through the boundless deserts, the Chinese Railroad Workers had accomplished a giant work, yet they had paid a heavy price.

2014年5月9日，美國勞工部宣布將參加建設美國第一條橫貫大鐵路的12000名華工載入勞工部名人堂，這是自1988年美國勞工部名人堂設立以來鐫刻的第一批亞裔面孔。但奇怪的是，他們卻沒有具體的名字。時隔150年後，人們對於參與修建這條鐵路的那些中國工人們仍然感到陌生而神秘。為了揭開歷史背後的謎團，攝制組踏上了找尋華工足跡的旅程。在內華達州的拉芙洛克小鎮，一位白人老頭在荒蕪的華人墓地上孤獨的守望著，龍卷風呼嘯而過，仿佛一聲嘆息，開啟了華工的百年記憶。 On May 9, 2014, U.S. Department of Labor inducted 12,000 Chinese Railroad Workers into the Labor Hall of Honor. They are the first Asian-Americans to receive this tribute since the hall was established in 1988. Strangely, these Chinese Railroad Workers did not have specific names on record. After 150 years, those who worked on the Central Pacific Railroad are unfamiliar and mysterious to everyone. In order to unveil the mystery of this history, a production team had traveled along the old trails of the Central Pacific Railroad to trace the footprint that the Chinese Railroad Workers had left.

VIS182 Final Project This video is about the Chinese funeral service in Los Angeles. It is not a popular topic since it's a taboo in Chinese society. Yet, I am thinking that funeral is the last connection of life and death, people's last ceremony in their life, it shouldn't be something that we get rid of. Another reason that lead me to this topic is the death of my father in 2011's Thanksgiving. Before the week I went back to Hong Kong for his funeral, I feel that I segregated myself from the surrounding. I didn't know how to face the reality when someone's disappeared. However, in the funeral, all my sisters and brother came back. Our home suddenly became lively. It is awkward that we were playing cards after the funeral night, but it is our way to cover the sadness. In my perception, funeral is supposed to be very sad and serious. Yet, once it really happened, the curiosity is overwhelming since the rites were like live shows that really distracted me. And, magically, I am seemingly relieved by those rites. All the traditions are actually comfort one's heart. The complicated procedures, interesting traditions, belief of afterlife are all important to conduct in a funeral. It is a difficult task that we all have to deal with. Just see how the people modify them nowadays. (This video is shoot in two different afternoon and supported by my college friends, Leticia Ng, Key Tsui and his parents.)

In this General Election, it's the first time having Chinese language materials and Official Ballot. HarkMemory Production, a group of graduate students from UCSD, helps the Registrar of Voters, County of San Diego produce a short film for the Chinese Language Services, step by step of "How to Register to Vote". It's a non-commission civic engagement project for the local Chinese Communities.
